Iphone Fitness Apps

Since its still early in the year, I thought I'd mention a few of my favourite iphone fitness apps. Best of all, most of these are free, or have an ad-supported 'lite' version.

Runkeeper Lite version is free. Pro is €9.99
Free for the month of January! This nifty little app uses the GPS to track your fitness activities such as running, cycling etc. At the end of each session it logs the data to your account (free or paid) and you can see a detailed breakdown of your pace, speed, calories burned & even view your route on a map.  You can also look at your training history, and compare your times on various routes.

Interval timer, by Deltaworks. Free

I frequently use a timer on my heart rate monitor for interval training, but it's very awkward to adjust the length of the intervals during a session. With this handy app, you can set numerous timers, and have intervals of  different lengths during your training session. You can even assign unique sounds to each timer to avoid confusion.

Ok, so its not really what you might think of as a 'fitness' app, but this app is brilliant! Set the alarm, place the phone on your mattress and go to sleep. The app judges how deeply you're sleeping by how much or little you're moving about. It will sound the alarm up to 30 minutes before the set time, when you are sleeping least deeply. This means you feel far more fresh and rested when you wake, even if you had less sleep than usual.  You can look back over previous nights to identify your sleeping patterns. The reason I've included this as a 'fitness' app, is because a lack of restful sleep seriously undermines our energy levels. This can make a training session that would usually be quite manageable seem like an uphill struggle.

Do you have a favourite app? Let me know..

  1. Hey Mal, Nice article.

For the android users there is a fantastic free app I use from Google called My Tracks http://mytracks.appspot.com/ it gives a lot of good info live and overall data at the end (distance traveled, time taken, moving time, elevation gained/lost, graphs elevation against speed, puts everything on a nice google map, and as a killer feature if you do a run you can upload your stats to a google spreadsheet for running or cycling etc it automatically uses a different one for each sport so you can map progress over time)

  2. Hi Brendan, thanks for the info. That sounds a lot like runkeeper. I really like the idea of logging the info to a spreadsheet. Very useful that one.
