Goal Setting - Are you making this BIG mistake?

It's time for another post on goalsetting, as this seems to be something that people are still struggling with.

You're probably familiar with the idea of setting S.M.A.R.T.  goals; if not, read goal-setting-key-to-your-success.

You may even have delved into goalsetting, and you have a great "why" for what you want to achieve; if you don't know what i mean by that, read motivation-and-goal-setting-find-your-why.

You've found your why, and you know to set a SMART goal for the result you want, so what else is there??

Why you should make Process Goals.
If you focus all your attention on results based goals, it will be very frustrating and demotivating
if you don't see constant progress towards those results. Eventually, you'll give up, which is what happens to most peoples new years resolutions. It's also why most people make the same (or strikingly similar) goals year after year.

The fact is, you can only control your actions, NOT the results your actions yield. This is why you should focus on Process Goals more than Results Goals.

Process goals are the day to day things such as:

  • taking 5 minutes each day to do simple exercises, no matter what else life throws at you
  • drinking a glass of water before each meal
  • going to bed 30 minute earlier each day
  • having a good stretch first and last thing each day.
  • adding an extra 1,000 steps to you normal day
  • eating breakfast each morning
  • eating  red and green veggies each day
Process goals allow you to stay grounded in the present day without getting stressed out about the bigger challenge in meeting your overall big SMART goal. This makes things a whole lot more manageable because it's no longer a big goal, but a series of simple, day to day tasks that you can mentally(or literally) 'tick off' as you do them.
